Chapter 08

***Oliver***

Drunk. Most definitely, because I’m sure she’s past the phase of tipsy and dove straight to slurring out half sentences. Good thing I only had half a glass and kept my head clear, since I’m the one carrying her into my living room. Standing, I glance left and right in a debate about what would be the best way to go. Put her into my sister’s bed or in mine?

She had a lot to drink in a very short time. Maybe it would be smart to put her in mine so I can keep an eye on her. Yes, that sounds logical, right? Heading for the bedroom, I hit the lights with my elbow. Walking in, I gently place her on the bed. Mae turns over to her side and pulls up her legs. I’m not sure the dress she’s wearing is comfortable to sleep in, but there’s no way I’m taking it off. The only thing I do remove is her shoes. Leaving them beside the bed, I stroll to the floor to ceiling glass walls and pull the curtains closed.

I’m still holding a bag that contains a lemon cake Nunzia made me bring home. We didn’t have a chance to have dessert, because I took Mae out of there when she threw back another glass of wine. If she can stomach it, that is, because I can imagine she’ll have a killer hangover. I’m just glad the Harlands meeting is set in the late afternoon. That might leave enough time for her to feel human again.

Putting the lemon cake in the fridge, I make my way back to the bedroom. She’s still sleeping on her side. Gently lifting the bedspread, I drape it over her and take time to watch her sleep. Her face is absolutely stunning with her lips slightly parted. A little rasp that’s hardly a snore slips through. I can’t resist and brush my fingertips along her temple and over her cheek.

I decide it’s best to take a shower first, cool down before I get some sleep. Turns out to be a good decision when I walk back into my bedroom some twenty minutes later, a towel wrapped around my waist. Pulling navy blue flannel pajama pants from my closet, I slide them on and throw the towel in the hamper.

Standing at the foot of the bed, I debate yet again. Should I take the couch, my sister’s bed, or crash beside Mae? My chest squeezes at the thoughts of leaving her alone in my bed. Making one more stop in the kitchen to grab a water
